Retatrutide Shelf Life: What We Know About Refrigeration, Room Temperature, and Freezing

TLDR

Retatrutide does not currently have an FDA-approved commercial shelf life. As of September 2026, Eli Lilly still describes retatrutide as an investigational injectable in Phase 3 development and says it is not available for public use. Lilly’s publicly available clinical-trial protocol requires retatrutide to be stored according to sponsor-labeled conditions in a monitored environment, but the public protocol does not disclose those actual temperature limits or expiration periods.

That means there is currently no scientifically defensible equivalent to statements such as “Ozempic lasts 56 days after opening” or “Zepbound lasts 21 days at room temperature.”

There is, however, some useful retatrutide-specific stability research. A 2026 patent application reported that a particular experimental aqueous formulation containing 12 mg/mL retatrutide maintained measured content and receptor potency during a 56-day study at both 2°C to 8°C and room temperature. That is meaningful formulation data, but it was not Lilly’s approved or clinical commercial presentation, and it does not establish a general 56-day retatrutide shelf life.

Retatrutide is in an unusual position.

It has already produced extensive Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical data, but it is still an investigational drug. Lilly announced additional successful Phase 3 trials in July 2026 and said it plans to submit a regulatory application in 2027. There is still no FDA-approved prescribing information telling the public exactly how long a finished retatrutide product can remain refrigerated, at room temperature, or outside normal storage conditions.

So an article about retatrutide shelf life has to separate three things that are often mixed together online:

what Lilly has established for its investigational drug, what independent formulation research has demonstrated, and what sellers of unapproved retatrutide claim.

Those are not the same level of evidence.

What Is Retatrutide?

Retatrutide, also known by its development code LY3437943, is a synthetic peptide developed by Eli Lilly.

It is a single 39-amino-acid peptide engineered to activate three receptors:

  • glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor, or GIPR;
  • glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor, or GLP-1R;
  • glucagon receptor, or GCGR.

The molecule contains three non-standard amino acid residues and is conjugated to a C20 fatty diacid through a linker attached to a lysine residue. That lipid component promotes albumin binding and contributes to retatrutide’s prolonged pharmacokinetic profile.

Clinical studies have found a circulating half-life of approximately six days, allowing once-weekly administration.

But biological half-life and pharmaceutical shelf life are completely different concepts.

A six-day half-life describes how quickly retatrutide is removed from the body after administration.

It does not mean a vial of retatrutide lasts six days.

Is There an Official Retatrutide Shelf Life?

Not one that is publicly available for ordinary consumers.

Lilly states that retatrutide remains investigational and has not been approved by any regulatory agency. The company says genuine retatrutide is currently available only within Lilly clinical trials.

The public protocol from Lilly’s Phase 2 obesity trial provides some useful insight into how investigational retatrutide was handled.

The protocol required investigators to confirm that correct storage conditions were maintained during transportation. It also required study drug to be stored in a secure, environmentally controlled and monitored area according to its labeled storage conditions.

What it does not provide publicly is the actual label.

There is no statement in that public protocol equivalent to:

2°C to 8°C for X months

or

room temperature for X days.

Those details would normally appear in investigational-product documentation or an Investigator’s Brochure rather than necessarily being reproduced in the public protocol.

So we know that Lilly has product-specific storage requirements.

We do not have enough public information to turn those requirements into a consumer retatrutide shelf-life chart.

How Long Does Retatrutide Last Refrigerated?

The safest scientific answer today is:

There is no publicly established universal refrigerated shelf life for injectable retatrutide.

Refrigeration around 2°C to 8°C is common for many peptide pharmaceuticals, and experimental retatrutide formulation data exist at that temperature.

But that still does not justify attaching a specific expiration period to every retatrutide solution.

Shelf life is established for a finished formulation, not simply an active peptide molecule.

A retatrutide formulation can vary in:

  • concentration;
  • pH;
  • buffer;
  • salts;
  • stabilizing excipients;
  • preservative system;
  • container material;
  • headspace;
  • manufacturing process.

Those variables can substantially change peptide stability.

General peptide-formulation research shows that pH, buffer selection, concentration, surfaces, temperature and excipients can influence chemical degradation and aggregation.

So even if Lilly ultimately releases a refrigerated retatrutide product, its future expiration period will belong to that exact drug product.

There Is Retatrutide-Specific Refrigerated Stability Data

One particularly interesting source appeared in a 2026 U.S. patent application concerning combinations of incretin drugs with an ActRIIB-based experimental therapeutic.

Researchers prepared retatrutide at 12 mg/mL in a formulation containing phosphate, glycine, sucrose and histidine at pH 7.5.

They evaluated retatrutide alone and retatrutide co-formulated with another biological molecule.

Measurements included retatrutide content and receptor activity.

The formulation was tested for 56 days under:

2°C to 8°C storage

and

room-temperature storage.

The patent authors reported that the tested formulations maintained integrity over the eight-week study.

That is real retatrutide stability evidence.

But the distinction is critical:

It does show:

Retatrutide can remain analytically and functionally stable for weeks in at least one specifically designed aqueous formulation.

It does not show:

Every injectable retatrutide solution is stable for 56 days.

It also does not establish the future commercial retatrutide expiration date.

The experiment used a particular buffer, concentration and formulation developed for a different experimental drug combination.

That makes it a useful scientific clue, not a prescribing instruction.

How Long Does Retatrutide Last at Room Temperature?

Again, there is currently no Lilly-approved room-temperature limit available to the public.

This is where online information about retatrutide becomes especially unreliable.

Some websites state:

24 hours

Others say:

21 days

Others say:

28 days

Others claim:

six weeks

or even longer.

There is no public regulatory label supporting one universal number.

The most interesting hard evidence remains the 2026 formulation study mentioned above. In that specific formulation, retatrutide was tested for up to 56 days at room temperature, and measured receptor potency remained within the experiment’s acceptable range.

For example, the study reported retatrutide alone throughout the 56-day experiment and continued to detect GLP-1R and GIPR activity at the final room-temperature time point.

That tells us something scientifically useful:

Retatrutide itself is not necessarily destroyed within hours simply because an aqueous formulation reaches room temperature.

But it does not tell us that an unidentified vial bought online can sit on a kitchen counter for 56 days.

The formulation matters too much.

Why Comparing Retatrutide With Mounjaro Can Be Misleading

Retatrutide and tirzepatide are related molecules developed by the same company.

It is therefore tempting to assume retatrutide will follow Mounjaro or Zepbound’s storage rules.

That is not scientifically justified.

Current Mounjaro labeling allows the single-dose product to remain at temperatures up to 86°F, or 30°C, for a total of 21 days outside refrigeration. The newer multi-dose presentations have different 30-day storage rules. Mounjaro must not be frozen.

Zepbound has its own presentation-specific limits.

Ozempic, meanwhile, has different rules again.

These differences illustrate an important pharmaceutical principle:

Even closely related peptide medicines do not automatically have the same shelf life.

Formulation and packaging are part of the drug.

Retatrutide will need its own stability data.

What Happens if Retatrutide Gets Warm?

Chemically, increasing temperature generally increases the rates of many degradation reactions.

For peptides, potential degradation pathways can include:

  • oxidation;
  • deamidation;
  • isomerization;
  • peptide-bond cleavage;
  • aggregation.

Temperature can also alter self-association and physical stability.

But temperature excursions are not binary.

A solution experiencing 75°F for two hours is different from one sitting at 100°F for two days.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers therefore perform controlled stability and excursion studies before publishing storage allowances.

For retatrutide, there is currently no public Lilly chart telling us how to handle every possible temperature excursion.

That means there is also no evidence-based universal rule such as:

“If retatrutide gets warm for 12 hours, it is still good.”

Any such number needs formulation-specific stability data behind it.

Can Injectable Retatrutide Be Frozen?

This question is even harder.

There is no publicly available Lilly prescribing information establishing a frozen shelf life for the clinical retatrutide injection.

That means we should not assume either:

freezing preserves it indefinitely

or

one freeze automatically destroys it.

Both claims would require evidence from the actual formulation.

Why Freezing a Peptide Solution Is Complicated

Freezing is not simply refrigeration turned up another notch.

When an aqueous peptide formulation freezes, water begins forming relatively pure ice crystals.

That forces dissolved molecules into the remaining liquid phase.

The peptide and formulation components can therefore become highly concentrated in microscopic unfrozen regions.

This is known as cryoconcentration or freeze concentration.

During freezing, local conditions can change dramatically, including:

Ice-water interfaces can also stress peptide molecules.

General pharmaceutical literature shows that although some biological drug products are intentionally stored frozen, others can undergo aggregation or other degradation during freeze storage. Frozen-state stability therefore cannot be assumed.

This is exactly why an official commercial product must be tested specifically.

Freeze-Thaw Cycling Can Be More Important Than Freezing Alone

One frozen period and ten freeze-thaw cycles are not equivalent.

Repeated cycling creates new ice interfaces and repeatedly concentrates and redistributes solutes.

For sensitive peptide and protein formulations, that can increase the risk of physical instability.

General peptide-stability research identifies freezing, temperature, interfaces and agitation as factors that can affect aggregation.

But again, this does not give us a retatrutide-specific discard threshold.

It tells us why researchers should avoid inventing one.

Does Retatrutide Degrade Like Semaglutide or Tirzepatide?

There are similarities, but retatrutide is its own molecule.

Retatrutide was engineered with several structural features intended to improve biological stability.

The original Lilly discovery paper describes three non-coded amino acids, including Aib residues that help protect the peptide from enzymatic degradation. The C20 fatty diacid also promotes albumin binding and helps produce its long circulating half-life.

But resistance to biological enzymes is not the same thing as pharmaceutical storage stability.

A peptide can resist DPP-4 cleavage inside the body yet still be susceptible to:

  • oxidation in a vial;
  • aggregation;
  • deamidation;
  • interfacial stress;
  • temperature-dependent chemical reactions.

Retatrutide’s six-day biological half-life therefore tells us very little about whether a particular formulated injection lasts 21, 28, 56 or 180 days in storage.

Can Appearance Tell You if Retatrutide Has Degraded?

Not reliably.

Visible problems such as precipitation, particles or discoloration can signal that a formulation has changed.

But peptide degradation can occur without any visible difference.

A solution can remain completely clear while containing:

  • oxidized peptide;
  • deamidated peptide;
  • sequence-related impurities;
  • small soluble aggregates;
  • reduced concentration.

This is why pharmaceutical stability testing uses analytical techniques such as:

HPLC or UHPLC to measure chemical purity,

LC-MS to identify degradation products,

size-exclusion chromatography to examine aggregation,

and

functional receptor assays to determine whether biological activity remains.

The 2026 retatrutide formulation experiment is useful specifically because the investigators did not judge stability simply by appearance. They measured content and receptor potency.

What About Retatrutide Sold Online?

This is where the shelf-life question becomes fundamentally different.

Lilly states that retatrutide is not approved and is not available to the public outside its clinical trials. FDA likewise states that retatrutide is not an approved drug and cannot legally be used in compounding under federal law.

So a vial being sold online as “retatrutide” is not simply an off-brand version of a finished Lilly product.

Its stability depends on questions such as:

Is the molecule actually retatrutide?

What salt or counterion form is present?

What is its purity?

What formulation was used?

What concentration is it?

What impurities are present?

Was it manufactured aseptically?

What stability-indicating testing has been performed?

Was the claimed shelf life actually validated?

Without those answers, a seller’s statement that its product is stable for “30 days,” “60 days,” or “two years” is supplier-specific information, not a scientifically established shelf life for retatrutide as a drug.

FDA has specifically warned that illicit retatrutide products may contain incorrect amounts, impurities, contaminants or even the wrong ingredient.

Research-Grade Retatrutide Has Its Own Storage Specifications

There is legitimate laboratory retatrutide available as an analytical reagent.

Those products do have supplier storage specifications.

For example, one major chemical-reagent supplier lists retatrutide as a solid research compound and gives specific frozen-storage periods for its own material.

Those specifications are useful for laboratories handling that supplier’s reagent.

They should not be transferred to Lilly’s injectable drug candidate.

The distinction is the same one that applies throughout pharmaceutical stability science:

a molecule is not the same thing as a finished drug formulation.

Why There Is No Simple Retatrutide Shelf-Life Number Yet

Retatrutide is actually a good example of how pharmaceutical shelf life is created.

Researchers first characterize the molecule.

Then formulation scientists develop a liquid formulation.

They study likely degradation pathways.

They perform accelerated stability experiments.

They monitor:

  • purity;
  • content;
  • potency;
  • aggregation;
  • pH;
  • particles;
  • container interactions.

Multiple production lots are then followed under long-term storage conditions.

Only after enough data exist can a manufacturer justify statements such as:

“Store refrigerated until the printed expiration date.”

or

“May remain at room temperature for 21 days.”

Those simple sentences on a drug label represent years of analytical work.

Retatrutide has reached late-stage clinical development, but its final public storage instructions have not yet reached that point.

What We Can Actually Conclude Today

The available evidence gives us a more nuanced answer than most online retatrutide shelf-life charts.

Retatrutide is clearly capable of existing as a stable injectable peptide formulation.

Lilly has administered it weekly for long clinical trials, meaning the sponsor obviously has controlled manufacturing, storage and transportation specifications for its investigational product. The public Phase 2 protocol confirms that temperature-controlled storage and monitoring were required.

Independent experimental evidence goes further. One 2026 patent application showed that a particular retatrutide aqueous formulation retained measured content and receptor activity through 56 days at both refrigerated and room-temperature conditions.

But neither source establishes a universal shelf life.

So, as of September 2026:

Refrigerated: Retatrutide can clearly be formulated for refrigerated storage, but there is no public Lilly expiration period.

Room temperature: At least one experimental formulation remained stable for 56 days, but there is no official room-temperature allowance for the clinical product.

Frozen: There is no publicly validated frozen-storage period for Lilly’s injectable formulation, and peptide formulations cannot be assumed to tolerate freezing.

Excessive heat: There is no public excursion table establishing when retatrutide should be considered degraded.

That uncertainty should disappear if retatrutide is approved and Lilly publishes final prescribing information.

Until then, attaching exact consumer shelf-life numbers to injectable retatrutide goes beyond the available evidence.
